how people not in publishing think publishing works:
-write book
-exchange book for giant bag of money
-buy 5 houses or something??

how publishing actually works:
-usually small advance (my 1st book was $2k!)
-then you get paid 2x/year
-ONLY IF your book earns out that advance

Quoted @LeaderMcConnell

Today, I made clear that if Democrats ever attack the key Senate rules, it would drain the consent and comity out of the institution. A scorched-earth Senate would hardly be able to function. It wouldn’t be a progressive’s dream. It would be a nightmare.

I guarantee it.

He calls himself “Leader”. What’s the German for that, again?

Potential for new strains (and vaccine-resistant ones) means we really need to have active production capacity for current vaccine, plus ramp-up capacity for a new vaccine every year—ideally stockpiling in advance.

 56  0  8

Prediction: UK gov pre-ordered 100M vaccine doses in 2020. For 68M people that’s barely sufficient (need 136M doses of two-shot jabs). If delayed second dose proves ineffective if delayed too long, we’ll need to re-do from start. A huge shortfall will open up in late 2021.

The only way to get a new vaccine factory built in the UK in 2020 would be with massive govt. intervention to pay private sector to build it—like the £20Bn they paid for private track’n’trace.

But Johnson cabinet were too dim-witted to even recognize there was a long game.

Nightingale Hospitals don’t/can’t work without doctors and nurses to staff them (which we don’t have).

Vaccine factories are expensive and specialized but conceivably could save vastly more lives. Problem: UK gov since 1979 encouraged foreign takeovers of UK pharma industry.

Russia, China (poss. India) are using home-grown vaccines as diplomatic ‘soft power’ levers to gain concessions. UK has zero leverage with USA and EU: will get sidelined if extra doses need to be ordered.

UK gov should have built a vaccine factory, not Nightingale Hospitals.

/2

 75  7  8

PREDICTION: big news of next 6 months will be vaccine shortages. EU is scrabbling to source doses for 500M people (late). Disputes with UK and US over allocations of Pfizer/AstraZeneca output. J&J vaccine still unavailable.

It’s going to get ugly. And UK will come off worst.

Police are charging an activist in a village in northern Russia with organizing a mass anti-Putin protest of snowmen. Elena Kalinina says the cops even tore down all the signs the snowmen are holding, which say things like "Down with the Tsar!"

Heartfelt. 😐

It bears repeating that *the Conservative Party itself is the crisis*, propped up as it is by a vast, inescapable media life support system, and our calamitous austerity, Brexit and Covid nightmares are just symptoms of that one terrible blight upon the nation.

We let a half-million people die because a mass disease shutdown would have crashed the all-important stock-market, which is so stupid that it’s currently being gamified by Reddit users to blow up a hedge fund worth billions. Anyway probably nothing bad about our economic system

The Prime Minister says "the government did everything it could to minimise deaths."

This is a lie.

It repeatedly rejected the scientific advice to lockdown: First in March, then in September, and then again in December.

The government is to blame for this catastrophe.
