Colson Whitehead says he was thinking about “the existential terror of being descended from slaves” while writing ‘The Underground Railroad.’ “It's a real miracle that [my ancestor] wasn't killed when they were kidnapped in Africa… [or on a] plantation.”
“I didn't think I was serious enough to write about slavery…with the gravity that it required. I didn't think I was a good enough stylist or craftsperson,” says Colson Whitehead about writing ‘The Underground Railroad’ years after coming up with the idea.
As a result of that little nudge, ‘The Underground Railroad’ won the 2016 National Book Award, was a New York Times best seller for 49 weeks, and it has been published in more than 40 languages.
“He started talking about the idea for ‘The Underground Railroad.’ And he was like, ‘I don't know if I can do it,’” says Colson Whitehead’s wife, literary agent Julie Barer. “But I knew he could do it. And so I had to do a little nudge.”
