Colson Whitehead says he was thinking about “the existential terror of being descended from slaves” while writing ‘The Underground Railroad.’ “It's a real miracle that [my ancestor] wasn't killed when they were kidnapped in Africa… [or on a] plantation.”
“I didn't think I was serious enough to write about slavery…with the gravity that it required. I didn't think I was a good enough stylist or craftsperson,” says Colson Whitehead about writing ‘The Underground Railroad’ years after coming up with the idea.
